First Fleet Exhibition 12:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center
First Fleet Exhibition

As the world anticipates NASA's Mars 2020 Mission (to launch in July 2020 from Cape Canaveral, FL), a series of exhibitions in Pompano Beach will celebrate human kind's quest for knowledge, thirst for exploration, and Florida's role in space exploration. John Chakeres' exhibition, First Fleet, began more than 30 years ago with the launch of the first Space Shuttle Columbia in 1981. He saw an opportunity for a long-term photographic project to document the Space Shuttle and contacted NASA with his proposal. NASA granted Chakeres permission to photograph the Shuttle operations at the Kennedy Space Center, and he began his five-year project capturing the sensational launch and landing operations of the four original space shuttles. These never-before-seen images represent a unique time in the history of human spaceflight which was filled with excitement and optimism about the future of space travel. The images are majestic and symbolic and give the viewer a sense of what was required to fly such a complex piece of technology.

About John Chakeres

Chakeres has been an artist working in photography more then 40 years. He has published four books of his photographs including First Fleet: NASA’s Space Shuttle Program 1981 - 1986 in 2018. Chakeres does not see himself as a traditional photographer, but as an image builder, trying to capture an essence, resulting in images that translate as pleasurable experiences to viewers. Chakeres describes his photographs to exist within themselves, detailed portraits of the crossroads where art and technology meet. Celebrating technology and the process of photography, Chakeres imagery becomes stories about photography’s capabilities to record detail with great clarity and definition.

Vanishing Florida Exhibition 12:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center • 1st and 2nd Floor
Vanishing Florida Exhibition

This exhibition celebrates Florida’s historical landscape with a series of 21 black and white photographs by Kevin Boldenow, featuring images of Florida’s off-the-beaten scenery.

"Ever since I picked up my parents' Brownie camera, I have been passionate about photography. Since then, I have built a career as a professional photographer specializing in 35mm, medium format, and digital landscapes with figurative imagery. In addition to living in Michigan, I have lived in 5 states, including Texas, New Jersey, and Virginia, before moving to Florida in 1996. Inspired by the density and drama of the landscape, I began to specialize primarily in black & white, as well as black & white infrared film, as a way to capture the myriad textures and details found in the overwhelmingly verdant landscape. Although color will always be a part of my portfolio, I believe that black & white dramatically reveals the combination of light, heat, and shadows found in the already mystical landscape. I seek to instill the sense of awe and serenity we feel when we truly experience the beauty of nature. So often, we allow little distractions to upset our balance. Nature helps to retain that balance."

Unfamiliar Ground Exhibition by Missy Pierce 12:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center
Unfamiliar Ground Exhibition by Missy Pierce

Florida artist Missy Pierce has exhibited her work throughout the US, as well as in the UK, Brazil, and New Zealand. She works as an artist-in-residence at the Arts Warehouse of Delray Beach, FL, juries art competitions in Florida, and teaches art in Italy. She has studied multi-media art in Les Angles, France; Portland, Oregon; Berkeley, California; and Boca Raton, Florida. Pierce holds a Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego, CA. She practiced law in California for ten years before becoming an artist. Missy Pierce is a past Bailey Contemporary Arts' Artist-in-Residence, and one of her public art projects is a Pompano Fish.

Missy's paintings, collage and book art explore the nature of identity. She is particularly interested in the contradicting parts of the self within each of us--especially the parts that can't easily be reconciled with the image we present outwardly. For this reason, her art focuses on the parts and pieces that comprise the whole being, whether those be the personal and social experiences that mold us or the cellular and genetic makeup that forms the essence of who we are. She combines diverse materials and painting styles to reflect the various influences on these conflicting threads of identity. This may include pages ripped from her old legal briefs, vibrant Caribbean colors, studies on insect anatomy and cellular structure, scribbled household "to do" lists, fabrics from her mother's generation, the electrified neon of the 70's, to the absurdest images of today's meme culture. Missy explore ways to tie these incongruent elements together in her art, whether it be through multiple layers, obsessively patterned details, or the biomorphic shapes that cavort and dance their way across the canvas.

Tickets for the performance are $15 and can be purchased online. Simply click that link, scroll to the Pompano Beach Cultural Center and click on "Buy Now."

The concert will air October 17, 2020 at 3:00 PM EST (and 8:00 PM in the UK). Patrons who purchase a ticket will receive a link to view the concert online and the link will be good until October 31, 2020.

Gordon Marshall, drummer with The Moody Blues for over 25 years, knew that there was a hunger in the market for The Moody Blues music. To fill the void, he put together an amazing group of musicians and formed the band GO NOW! Mick Wilson, the lead singer of GO NOW!, was the lead singer with 10cc for over 20 years. Gordon and Mick are joined on stage by Patrick Duffin, Ryan Farmery and Nick Kendall, and together recreate the magical music we all know, including all the major hits. With 25 years’ experience with The Moody Blues, Gordon has created true-to-the-original arrangements, making every performance truly magical.

The Moody Blues distinguished themselves through five decades as that shimmering jewel vindicating rock music as a substantial artistic contribution to Western culture. Since the ‘60s, as a part of the historic original British invasion of supergroups, The Moody Blues lit up the hearts and minds of millions of rock fans with inspiring anthems like “Nights in White Satin,” “Tuesday Afternoon” and “I’m Just A Singer (In A Rock and Roll Band),” which express universal themes of love, compassion and peace. They have sold in excess of 70 million albums worldwide and have been awarded an astonishing 14 platinum and gold discs. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 and ceased touring at that time.

In recent years GO NOW! has performed throughout the UK, selling out theaters and making many return appearances. Their first venture into the U.S. in 2019 resulted in 12 out of 12 sold-out performances at venues in Arizona and resulted in a planned repeat 14-show run in Arizona and California in the spring of 2020. Their April 2021 engagements with the Omaha Symphony and the Philly Pops have made it possible for more U.S. venues to bring the hauntingly beautiful music of The Moody Blues to fans who still swoon when they hear those first magical notes of “Nights in White Satin.”

One third of the net profits of ticket sales is returned to the Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department for programming.
