do it Exhibition curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist 12:00 am | Ali Cultural Arts Center
do it Exhibition curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist

This is a joint exhibition at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center (July 9 - September 30) and the Ali Cultural Arts Center (August 20 - October 21). The celebrated do it exhibition which evolves as audience and staff perform the instructions of selected artworks in the exhibition; we may also be able to invite community members and artist to volunteer and assist in the completion of some of the projects while the exhibition is on view. In addition, do it (home) provides content for at-home instructions that can be shared through social media and websites. This traveling exhibition will retire at the end of 2021, making Pompano Beach one of its last iterations.

Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, do it began in Paris in 1993 as a conversation between Obrist and the artists Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier. Obrist was concerned with how exhibition formats could be rendered more flexible and open-ended. This discussion led to the question of whether a show could take “scores,” or written instructions by artists, as a point of departure, each of which could be interpreted anew every time they were enacted. To test the idea, Obrist invited 12 artists to send instructions, which were then translated into 9 different languages and circulated internationally as a book.

Nearly 20 years later after the initial conversation took place, do it has been featured in at least 50 different locations worldwide, including Australia, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Mexico, Costa Rica, Slovenia and Uruguay. The driving force behind the exhibition is aptly summarized in the words of Marcel Duchamp, who states that “art is a game between all people of all periods.” He is only one of several predecessors to have shaped the modus operandi of this exhibition, which also draws from Conceptual and Minimalist art of the 1960s and 1970s as well as Fluxus practices. Each do it exhibition is uniquely site-specific because it engages the local community in a dialogue that responds to and adds a new set of instructions, while it remains global in the scope of its ever-expanding repertoire. This also means that the generative and accumulative aspects of do it’s ongoing presentation are less concerned with notions of the “reproduction” or materiality of the artworks than with revealing the nuances of human interpretation in its various permutations and iterations. In this way, do it is able to bridge the gaps between the temporalities of past, present and future.

This open exhibition model has become the longest-running and most far-reaching exhibition to ever take place, giving new meaning to the concept of the “Exhibition in Progress.” In addition to the production of an on-line version of do it created by Obrist in conjunction with e-flux in 2004, other versions that do it has grown to encompass include do it (museum), do it (home), do it (TV), do it (seminar), do it (outside), do it (party), as well as some anti-do its, a philosophy do it and most recently a UNESCO children’s do it.

In building off the 1997 collaboration of ICI with Obrist to create a do it that took place in 25 cities across North America, a new version of the exhibition, which marks the 20th anniversary of this landmark project, presents the largest selection of instructional works to date—including 50 newly commissioned pieces from artists selected by Obrist and ICI. Organized around the instructions submitted by artists, venues will select at least 20 instructional works to present from a list of 250.

do it is a traveling exhibition conceived and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and organized by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York. The exhibition and the accompanying publication were made possible, in part by grants from the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation, and with the generous support from Project Perpetual and ICI’s International Forum and Board of Trustees.

Silent Spaces Exhibition 12:00 am | Bailey Contemporary Arts
Silent Spaces Exhibition

Opening Reception
Friday, October 1 from 6 - 8 pm
Bailey Contemporary Arts Center

Tickets available on Eventbrite, space is limited, tickets will not be available at the door.

Since the COVID-19 numbers are once again on the rise, the City of Pompano Beach requires that you wear a mask while you are attending this event.

Silent Spaces is an exhibition that celebrates the changing landscape of South Florida and invites us to observe the places that we constantly inhabit and that we rarely reflect on. Living a fast-paced life, our vision is trained to seek for content, filtering out objects and details that become irrelevant. The ‘plein air’ paintings and drawings featured in this exhibition, represent a moment in time, giving a voice to these urban settings, which are constantly present.

This exhibition includes “Yellow Line”, a body of work that showcases people walking on a street. Painted from a second-floor window near Wilton Manors, these images feature a single point-of-view which contrasts with the diversity of characters and situations that appeared in front of that window. The presence of people in this series, maintains Janet’s interest in the unseen and in capturing a moment in time that for many may be ignored.

About Janet Onofrey

Janet Onofrey was born in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to South Florida where the sunlight and mild weather beckoned her to paint, “in the open air,” en plein air. Her Master’s Degree in Painting lead to a residency in Provence, France and time in Barcelona and Paris. She was awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artist Fellowship judged for her extensive body of work. Janet was accepted into the Skopelos Foundation of Art Residency on Skopelos Island off the coast of Greece in 2016.

Her art has been juried into national exhibitions such as the American Impressionist Society, American Women Artists, and is a member of the Oil Painters of America. The Baker Museum in Naples, Florida, Annual All Florida Juried Exhibition, Boca Raton Museum of Art; Museum for Women Artists and Andrews Art Museum in North Carolina are just a few of her museum exhibitions. She was featured in “New American Paintings,” and her paintings reside in both public and private collections nationally. She teaches at Boca Raton Museum School of Art and privately.

A Subtext of Context : Works by Roy Wiemann 12:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center
A Subtext of Context : Works by Roy Wiemann

In this exhibition, Wiemann present a series of artworks that reflect very private recollections in a discreet way, inserting text into the artwork as part of the image to associate with the original experience. These words, pulled from personal notes, e-mails, journals and even literature, are made visible in his art through a number of ways such as silk screen, collage or even simply handwritten on the surface.

As this textual aspect of Wiemann’s art has developed into more of a focus, he intentionally conceals parts of these words to draw the viewer into the work; not only to make sense of these seemingly obscure passages but also to have them open up about themselves while exploring and interpreting the art.

About Roy Wiemann

Born and bred in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Roy Wiemann completed an MFA in painting at the University of Miami and headed directly to New York City where besides raising a family, he spent over 30 years as a successful illustrator working for a wide array of corporate clients. This diverse roster includes American Express, the Guggenheim, HBO, the New Yorker, the Smithsonian, and Steinway & Sons among many others. Between the deadlines, Wiemann continued painting and exhibiting his fine art in the city.

Currently living in Florida, Wiemann is focused on his painting and illustration careers in addition to a delightful reunion with humidity.

I Don't Care Exhibition 11:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center
I Don't Care Exhibition

Opening Reception: Friday, October 8, 2021, 6 - 9 PM

Featuring artworks by Latin American artists in commemoration of Hispanic Heritage month.

A vision of contemporary artists, - some emerging, others middle career, some pop artists, others investigating the expressiveness of pop art -, converges in this exhibition "regardless" of individual universes, only moved by the communicative immediacy and the expressive coldness of the pop language. I DON’T CARE is an empty expression, superfluous, individual and without apparent commitments, similar to the current times of uncertainty that we live. The concept for I DON’T CARE has been motivated by the paradox that the phrase itself contains, because it is implausible that I do not care about anything and give said statement a true appearance. The fear of commitment and the establishment of emotional ties are the motivating pillars for the I DON'T CARE exhibition.

In order to break the expression I DON'T CARE, which contains within itself detachment and superficiality, this exhibition tries to transgress the inexpressive and impersonal frivolity of the Pop theme seen in portraits of celebrities, repetition of Campbell's tin cans and typographies (works by Julio Molina, Sami AKL and Teo Beceiro) to move towards themes where the artist's subjectivity is palpable, delivering a more humanly warm and open work to dialogue with the viewer without departing from the Pop language.

Works by Luis Cabrera, Cesar Beltran, Micky Goldstein and Marcela Solana are examples.

Whether you are curious about drawing, want to practice your skills, or simply unwind, spend time doodling, meeting new people and forgetting about the outside world; this Drawing Space is for you.

Drawing Space is a free 2-hour activity for teens and adults in the community to spend time drawing live models in a variety of props and costumes. Its members share an equitable space of collaboration and change of theme to create new theater sets that tell stories, and in turn promote a challenge for those who draw.

Davis and Dow features outstanding selections from the Great American Songbook was filmed live and captures the multi-award-winning duo's incredible jazz stylings.

Davis and Dow are two strong halves of one BIG sound; a culmination of performing and touring together for 25 years. They tackle jazz and pop standards with a daring sense of abandonment. While their style is deeply rooted in the classic jazz tradition, they enjoy weaving different genres of music into their repertoire. A Bossa Nova sung in French or a jazz standard with a Bach Interlude. Julie Davis is everything from scat-singer to balladeer. She grew up listening to the music of Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald among others on her parent's vinyl collection. Singing jazz came naturally to Julie from a young age.

An alum of the University of North Texas, Kelly Dow is a world-class seven-string guitarist who considers himself a perpetual student of the instrument. His primary influences are Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery. He blends all styles from Be-Bop to Classical to create a strong individual sound delivered with sensitivity and creativity. “Simply orchestral in support" “Swinging” and “Multi-hued” are how critics have described his performance.

Nature/Nurture: Pathways to Nature Journaling Workshop

Third Fridays l 6:00 – 8:30 pm l $30
Bailey Contemporary Arts Center
This monthly 2.5 hours workshop explores the dynamics of nature drawing and creative writing. Join Autumn Kioti, a trained naturalist and environmental educator, visual artists and storyteller, in a journey to the crossroads of art, ecology and exploration. In this workshop, participants have the opportunity to draw a variety of objects and artifacts found in nature, using watercolor, pencil and ink, along with alternative and creative painting methods.
Workshops include watercolor sketch pad to take home.

Adults. No experience necessary. 16 students max.

About Autumn Kioti
The creation and transmission of a narrative is integral to Autumn's work as an artist, naturalist and storyteller; the best kind of "going viral." Using inspirations from nature, animal documentaries and scientific studies, their own search for identity and community, and processes including botanical and traditional printmaking, collagraph, cyanotype, pen and ink, non-traditional watercolor techniques, found object art, they create two- and three-dimensional art and installation, as well as programming and performances. Past artist residencies include the NYC Audubon Society, the Santa Fe Art Institute, Art Monastery Italia (Italy), NOoSPHERE Arts, and more. Autumn currently travels South Florida with Wildness is Necessary, their art, nature, and justice program for all ages, and works as a naturalist and environmental educator. It is their wildest hope that the narratives they create bring viewers and participants closer to an understanding that humans are of nature and not separate from it, dismantling the idea of the scala naturae, and planting our feet firmly on the Earth beside our non-human brethren (and maybe creating a little magic and silliness too).
