25 th The Longer the Feather Exhibition 12:00 am | Bailey Contemporary Arts Center

“The Longer the Feather” commemorates Black History and Women’s Months by featuring photographic work by Walter Griffin and paintings by M Jamesly Saint Louis. In his photographs, Griffin shares his fascination with Sunday Church Hats, which began at an early age when he visited and observed a milliner – a hat-maker – create a hat from scratch. These portraits of women wearing striking hats were originally shown in 2004 at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis to accompany the play “Crowns”, and it demonstrates Griffin’s long trajectory as a photographer. Jamesly Saint Louis presents a new body of work titled “An Anthology of Art”, which he defines as an exploration into virtual and literary storytelling through painting and poetry. “Every aspect of the exhibition is meant to expand upon the spectrum of Black creative expression”, writes Jamezly. His portraits depict Black lives and experiences as a way to add to history, and as an act of healing.
In addition, a call to images results in a video-loop displayed in the galleries, featuring members of the community wearing their Sunday’s Best.

27 th Reset, Refresh and Ready Exhibition: new works by local ArtsUnited artists 12:00 am | Bailey Contemporary Arts Center - West Gallery

ArtsUnited, Inc., Florida’s premier lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) arts organization is pleased to present “Reset, Refreshed and Ready”, a mixed media visual art exhibit showcasing new artwork created by local artists. ArtsUnited is a 20 year old, non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to showcasing art from the LGBTQ Community.
No one can deny that 2020 was a dramatic year with the COVID 19 Pandemic, U.S. Presidential and Congressional Elections and community activism for social change and racial equality. The pandemic changed the way we work, shop and even gather. The elections changed who will lead us going forward. The community activism has already changed some hearts and minds and brought down some symbols from our past.
We emerge from it all, mindful of the lessons learned and the work still to be done. We are “Reset, Refreshed and Ready” for the future. This exhibition includes works created with a mindset of what should be and not what was, of possibilities and not obstacles, celebrating progress and not critiques of where we failed.

1 st Un/Covered Exhibition by Tina La Porta 12:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center

This exhibition will feature artwork by Tina La Porta, who will create wooden structures that are covered in wallpaper in addition to framed artwork on the walls of the gallery.
"Since being diagnosed with a Mental Illness in 2006, my work has become the medium to describe my disability through the language of visual art. In this sense, despite my disability, I am able to express myself and be a vital part of society. I work with silkscreen images of pills and pill bottles printed them onto wallpaper. Each wallpapered screen print is carefully collaged onto large panels in a decentered pattern. My use of wallpaper refers to the short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Wallpaper covers walls just as pills cover the symptoms of mental illness experienced while in treatment. Images of bird cages, parrots, elephants and empty chairs on wallpaper are repeated throughout these works. " ~ Tina La Porta

Karina Iglesias hosted by Tamara G of WLYF 101.5
Pop, Jazz R&B, Funk, Soul
In 2013, Karina was a contestant on NBC's #1 Hit TV Show, The Voice. She made it to the Top 16 on the live shows. She was originally on Adam Levine's team but was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of "Its a man's, man's, man's world" which turned into a YouTube sensation. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias brings forth a strong element of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.
Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm and blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter.
A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Karina began writing songs during the time she started working extensively with local bands. It soon became apparent that through composing original material, her true artistic identity had emerged. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics now revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song.

Aptly described by the Miami Herald as an artist blessed with, “the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat ‘King' Cole,” the ample and aural evidence of Harris’ moving and magisterial artistry can be heard on his fourteen recordings as a leader; his far-flung and critically-acclaimed concerts around the world, from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, to the 2012 London Olympics, and a many prestigious bookings in Europe, The Middle East and Asia.

She has performed with a slate of powerhouse artists including Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Kelly Clarkson, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King, and recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz, among other artists. Her debut solo album, Mother’s Child, is a rich blend of soulful ballads, rock and R&B showcases her gifts as a songwriter. it is a universal story of love and loss.
She began honing her vocal chops with soul greats Gerald Austin and Peabo Bryson and contemporary soul maverick Dionne Farris. Her first world tour was as a dancer with legendary singer Whitney Houston after which she combined her love for music and dance to earn the role of Mary Magdalene in the national tour of the Broadway musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, earning critical acclaim which led to featured performances throughout the US and Europe.
