Into Orbit: African American Astronauts Exhibition 12:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center
Into Orbit: African American Astronauts Exhibition

The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is happy to invite the public back to the art galleries by appointment only.

We celebrate our country’s African American Astronauts with an exhibition that inspires younger generations. From the thousands of images available by NASA for educational uses, some of the images selected in this exhibition show the astronauts doing are everyday tasks, like taking photographs and filming, except they are in space. In other photographs, they are training in swimming pools, doing spacewalks, posing during public events and addressing children.

This celebration of our space heroes includes photographs and biographies of astronauts that include: Michael Anderson, Guion S. Bluford, Jr., Charles F. Bolden, Yvonne Darlene Cagle, Robert L. Curbeam, Jr., Benjamin Alvin Drew, Jeanette J. Epps, Victor J. Glover, Frederick D. Gregory, Bernard A. Harris, Joan E. Higginbotham, Mae C. Jemison, Ronald E. Mcnair, Leland D. Melvin, Jr., Bobby Satcher, Winston E. Scott, and Stephanie D. Wilson.

This exhibition is organized in conjunction with LAAP's exhibition on Earth Day, to create a contrast of the exploration and study of our planet, and space exploration, which continues to spark our curiosity. This exhibition was originally presented at the Ali Cultural Arts Center in Summer 2020.

A Post Modern Re-Imagining of Current and Classic American, Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian Pop Music

In 2013, Karina was a contestant on NBC's #1 Hit TV Show, The Voice. She made it to the Top 16 on the live shows. She was originally on Adam Levine's team but was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of "Its a man's, man's, man's world" which turned into a YouTube sensation. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias brings forth a strong element of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm and blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter.

A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Karina began writing songs during the time she started working extensively with local bands. It soon became apparent that through composing original material, her true artistic identity had emerged. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics now revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song.

Genre: Pop, Jazz R&B, Funk, Soul

Aptly described by the Miami Herald as an artist blessed with, “the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat ‘King' Cole,” the ample and aural evidence of Harris’ moving and magisterial artistry can be heard on his fourteen recordings as a leader; his far-flung and critically-acclaimed concerts around the world, from Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, to the 2012 London Olympics, and a many prestigious bookings in Europe, The Middle East and Asia.
