Into Orbit: African American Astronauts Exhibition 12:00 am | Pompano Beach Cultural Center
Into Orbit: African American Astronauts Exhibition

The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is happy to invite the public back to the art galleries by appointment only.

We celebrate our country’s African American Astronauts with an exhibition that inspires younger generations. From the thousands of images available by NASA for educational uses, some of the images selected in this exhibition show the astronauts doing are everyday tasks, like taking photographs and filming, except they are in space. In other photographs, they are training in swimming pools, doing spacewalks, posing during public events and addressing children.

This celebration of our space heroes includes photographs and biographies of astronauts that include: Michael Anderson, Guion S. Bluford, Jr., Charles F. Bolden, Yvonne Darlene Cagle, Robert L. Curbeam, Jr., Benjamin Alvin Drew, Jeanette J. Epps, Victor J. Glover, Frederick D. Gregory, Bernard A. Harris, Joan E. Higginbotham, Mae C. Jemison, Ronald E. Mcnair, Leland D. Melvin, Jr., Bobby Satcher, Winston E. Scott, and Stephanie D. Wilson.

This exhibition is organized in conjunction with LAAP's exhibition on Earth Day, to create a contrast of the exploration and study of our planet, and space exploration, which continues to spark our curiosity. This exhibition was originally presented at the Ali Cultural Arts Center in Summer 2020.

The Devices Project Exhibition

The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is happy to invite the public back to the art galleries by appointment only.

The Devices Project
Featuring Artists Hillerbrand+Magsamen

The Devices Project explores our relationship to everyday objects and how we use them to playfully survive and cope in a world of personal and political turmoil. From phone apps that let you talk to a million people, to robots in your home responding to your ever word, we still need to feel connected and hopeful. After experiencing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, TX and the strong community support that arose, we began to think more about ways to prepare in cases of emergency and how this relates to our family and community.

Pulling from the literary concept of Homo Faber that human beings are able to control their fate and their environment through tools, this work examines how a family of four tinkers with and animates banal items such as plastic bags, tape, yarn, aluminum foil, and other household materials in an attempt to connect to each other and the larger world while transforming space, place, person and dwelling.

About Hillerbrand+Magsamen

The artistic team of Hillerbrand+Magsamen is the collaboration of Stephan Hillerbrand and Mary Magsamen. Together they create sculpture, installation, performance, video and photographic works they call “Suburban Fluxus”. Often including their two children, Madeleine and Emmett in their work, the family critiques and playfully scrutinizes contemporary suburban life.

Hillerbrand+Magsamen have presented their videos in international film and media festivals including Houston Cinema Arts Festival, London SciFi Film Festival, WAND V Stuttgarter Filmwinter, New York Underground Film Festival, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Boston Underground Film Festival and MonkeyTown. Their cinematic based installations have been exhibited at the Everson Museum (Syracuse, NY), Center for Photography Woodstock (Woodstock, NY), Diffusion Photography Festival (Wales, UK) and Houston Center for Photography (Houston, TX).

Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Division is proud to introduce the Pompano Beach Arts Virtual Music Series featuring powerhouse performances by award-winning, globally-acclaimed artists.

A Post Modern Re-Imagining of Current and Classic American, Afro-Caribbean, and Brazilian Pop Music

In 2013, Karina was a contestant on NBC's #1 Hit TV Show, The Voice. She made it to the Top 16 on the live shows. She was originally on Adam Levine's team but was later stolen by Shakira after her epic performance of "Its a man's, man's, man's world" which turned into a YouTube sensation. With her highly-focused artistic vision, rich cultural background and proclivity for harnessing a wide range of production techniques, Karina Iglesias brings forth a strong element of innovation and heralds a much-needed return to the authenticity of pure soul music.

Born and raised in Miami, Florida to Honduran parents, Karina Iglesias’ sound mirrors the diverse musical and cultural influences that have shaped her character and forged her individuality as an artist. With a style equally informed by rhythm and blues, boleros, gospel and hip-hop Karina delivers her performances with the intimacy of a deep soul crooner and the conviction and drive of a dauntless female singer/songwriter.

A veteran of the Miami live music scene, Karina began writing songs during the time she started working extensively with local bands. It soon became apparent that through composing original material, her true artistic identity had emerged. Her emotionally charged and deeply personal lyrics now revealed a depth of character and vulnerability that can only be conveyed when a singer truly connects with their song.

Genre: Pop, Jazz R&B, Funk, Soul
